Top 5 games of 2017 – Late Review

As the year comes to an end, let’s look back at 2017 that could possibly be known as one of the best years for new game releases. This year witnessed the release of some of the most iconic versions of classics like Mario, Resident Evil and Sonic as well as newbies like Yakuza 0 and Horizon Zero Dawn made their way to the spotlight.

It wasn’t easy choosing just 5 from a huge list of games offering all kinds of experiences but we selected from within different genres so that you get a snapshot of the kind of variety offered by 2017.

Super Mario Odyssey:

If you’re a 90’s kid, you obviously remember Super Mario but in 2017, Nintendo just took the adventure a notch up by adding maniacal features to make it even more addictive than it was. The best part however about Odyssey is that it offers a dozen worlds to play in with 999 collectible “power moons”. It’s challenging because almost half of the collection is inaccessible until after you get to the main story and win at it. So, if you haven’t gotten your hands on this one, you’ve missed out something great 2017 had to offer.
Sonic Mania:

As crazy and unbelievable as it sounds, Sonic Mania is actually a product created by Sega and a bunch of modders and fans. It’s exactly what the Sonic franchise needed in order to remain relevant. There are exciting new stages in this one but it’s not a complete drift away from the original Sonic. You could perhaps call it a remix version. It takes you down the memory lane but has an edge due to its smooth platforming and excellent speed. Definitely falling in love with Sonic again.

Resident Evil 7:

Recently, we saw Resident Evil adopting a happy-action movie tone. But it just wasn’t clicking. 2017 features the release of Resident Evil 7 which is exactly what we have been missing; the survival horror tone. The complex story is maddening with a mansion, nightmares, rooms and corridors that induce anxiety and the best part being the family that has been infected by intergalactic bacteria. Wait, there’s more. The game doesn’t stop at that, the adventure is extended beyond the house involving a corporate conspiracy merged with classic Resident Evil attributes. This makes for an intense & thrilling experience.

Horizon Zero Dawn:

This is one of the visually most stunning games of 2017. It’s like a breath of fresh air introduced by Guerrilla Games which is famous for its dark and gritty series of games. Horizon Zero Dawn features lush, vibrant terrain and is filled with quests and collectibles that makes you not want to stop playing. You are surrounded by unique robot animals that wander on the land filled with adventure. You make your own story by approaching different situations with a toolbox of toys at your disposal. What’s most beautiful about it is the little details incorporated in the game like the sunrise over a glittering field of snow.

Yakuza- 0:

This one is the perfect starting point for new gamers. Its set on the glitzy 1980s Tokyo background and offers two stories simultaneously. One lets you play as the grim series icon Kiryu as well as the wild Yakuza Majima. It’s like a rollercoaster ride with intense drama amalgamated with silly side stories. At one point where you’re on a quest to prove your innocence, on the other you can be out for a karaoke night. If you’re someone who likes spontaneity, this is the one for you.

Summing up 2017 in merely 5 games does not do justice to the year filled with surprises and adventures but it gives you the 5 names that you should put in your new year’s resolution if you haven’t played them yet. On a side note, Happy New Year Ya’ll!
